Since its creation in 1997, the York Wilson Endowment Award has been given annually to an
eligible Canadian art museum or public gallery to assist with the purchase of an
original artwork by a Canadian artist. The award, which is the result of three gifts
totaling $613,636 from Lela M. Wilson and the late Maxwell Henderson, honours the
contribution of Canadian painter York Wilson by contributing to the acquisition of new
works by living, contemporary Canadian painters and sculptors.
The York Wilson Endowment Award is valued at up to $30,000 annually. Past
recipients include The Winnipeg Art Gallery (1998), McIntosh Art Gallery (London) (1999),
The Oakville Gallery (2000), The Hamilton Art Gallery (2001) and The Vancouver Art Gallery
(2002). Each year, curators and directors of Galleries are invited to be members of the
Selection Committee.
"It gives me great pleasure to annually reaffirm my commitment to the
visual arts community in Canada," states Mrs. Wilson. "Our galleries and our
Canadian artists need everyones support to grow and develop. The York Wilson
Endowment Award, which I initiated with the Canada Councils assistance in 1997 is
meant to be seen as a sign of encouragement and confidence in our artists. It is also my
intention to increase this award when possible."
